A lifeline in an uncertain future

Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, situated north of mainland Europe. It is approximately midway between continental Norway and the North Pole. Since 2008, the seed vault in Svalbard (known as the ‘Doomsday Vault’) and its guardians have been entrusted by the world’s governments with the safekeeping of the most prized varieties of crops on which human civilisation was raised.
